In 1971, Johnny Morris, frustrated by the lack of tackle in local stores, rented a U Haul trailer and took off across the country filling it with the newest premium fishing tackle he could find. When he returned home to Springfield, Missouri, Johnny set up shop in his dad’s liquor store, which was located on the way to Table Rock Lake. With this simple idea, Bass Pro Shops was born.

This new store became popular with local and out of state fishermen. By 1974, Johnny printed and mailed the first Bass Pro Shops catalog. In 1978, he introduced Bass Tracker ” the first boat, motor, and trailer package designed just for anglers.

By building and selling boats factory direct, Johnny was able to pass on huge value and savings to fishermen. Tracker has remained America’s 1 selling fishing boat for more than 35 years running.

From those humble beginnings, Bass Pro Shops has become America’s leading outdoor retailer with stores across America and Canada. Every Bass Pro Shops store still offers an incredible array of fishing and boating equipment. We’re also the premier shopping destination for hunting, camping, and outdoor cooking gear as well as outdoor footwear and nature themed gifts.

Bass Pro Shops is more than a retail mecca for sportsmen, though. Since the beginning, Johnny Morris has been dedicated to inspiring people, especially youth and families, to love, enjoy and conserve the great outdoors. That commitment, demonstrated over the course of several decades, is a big reason why Bass Pro Shops is known as the outdoor industry’s corporate conservation leader. Bass Pro Shops conservation efforts include partnering with and supporting the efforts of many organizations that work to conserve and manage the nation’s natural resources. The company’s key conservation initiatives include fish and wildlife habitat improvements, conservation and outdoor skills education, improving water quality and quality of our lakes and springs, and conservation advocacy.

Salt Water Taffy was introduced on the AC Boardwalk in the 1880’s as the first “Atlantic City Souvenir.” The 1 lb box remains the most popular souvenir almost 125 years later. The recipe resulted in a smooth, rich taffy available in many flavors and a cut to fit the mouth shape. We also offer the ability to purchase items as open stock rather that in a traditional place setting for example one mug vs. a teacup and saucer. Our famous Holiday dinnerware and accessories are available year round. We also have special gifts to commemorate each season and special event.

Kids seem to go through shoes in a hurry. And now that it time to get those back to school items, or just find a bigger size, there are some great shoe stores in the Seattle area where your kids fit, comfort and style come first.

In the open air University Village, with a play place located right outside the door, Sole Food is a locally owned and operated boutique, and the sister store to the University Village Kid Club (a clothing and unique toy boutique). Dress shoes, sandals, sneakers, even ballet slippers and soccer cleats can be discovered here. “Jon Stewart is very funny, and if I were in his position, I’d be doing a lot of the same things. In fact, a lot of the jokes I’ve heard before, either from my staff or myself,” Beck says by e mail. “He takes things out of context (no worse than most of the other mainstream media) and is more interested in being funny than trying to actually understand the key messages in [my] show. But I don’t think he’s looking for a Pulitzer. People like Jon, his ratings are good. Good for him, keep doing what he’s doing. People seem to like watching my show as well, and hopefully that continues for both of us for a very long time.”

The piece also features an interesting quote from a fawning Brian Williams, who says of Mr. Stewart, “I envy his platform to shout from the mountaintops.” Yes, Brian, it’s sad that you only have NBC Nightly News at your disposal. You’ll make it someday.

Reuters’ Felix Salmon does a manful close reading of an article in the latest issue of The Wall Street Journal’s glossy magazine called WSJ. Here’s Mr. Salmon:

The point is that there are lots of Ugg boots. company in China. That company owns a bunch of trademarks, which somehow means that the WSJ can talk with a straight face about “genuine UGG boots,” while saying that all other Ugg boots are fakes. But the fact is that an Australian Ugg boot, made by a company which long predates the Ugg trademark, is by any sensible definition just as genuine, if not more so, than the boots that the WSJ is falling over itself teaching us to recognize and distinguish.

Now thanks to a bit of meme forensics by Matt Gross of The New York Times, the identity of the little guy can be revealed: He’s a 10 year old Floridian named Stephen Rout whose father slapped a baby picture up on personal website when the kid was just six months old, a baby picture which then proceeded to somehow became a mainstay of Japanese visual culture.

So the bland baby snap is there any other kind? has been featured on all kinds of Japanese game shows and Photoshopped to within an inch of its little life, getting, among other things, the now famous caption “Don’t call me baby! Call me Mr. Baby!”

Who first found Stephen’s picture is not known, nor how it was found. What’s known is that a 2chan user superimposed Stephen’s face over an illustration from a manga comic book, and turned it into an image macro a simple Web form that allowed users to put words into a cartoon like thought bubble. The meme ification of Stephen began.

As Mr. Rout uncovered new permutations of the meme, he was anything but freaked out. An internet dweller since the days of Usenet, he wasn’t afraid for Stephen’s safety. Plus,
ugg chestnut short Best Media Writing of the Week
he knew that there was nothing he, or any parent, could do to prevent the use (or misuse) of an image of his child, once it was uploaded to the Web.

Furthermore, Mr. Rout, now an information technology expert at the University of Florida, understood that the meme really had nothing to do with Stephen qua Stephen the photo was being treated as a kind of open source stock image, stripped of any identifier or context.

Over at Nieman Journalism Labs, which has planted itself in my mind as the best one stop shop for smart, geeky parsings of the news business, there’s this post arguing that all the recent shrieking over newsrooms using audience metrics to guide their content is wrongheaded. My favorite part of the post takes the sentence “We know what the audience wants” and takes it apart bit by bit:

“The Audience”: What’s this thing we insist we know so much about? We call it the audience, but sometimes we slip and call it “the public.” But audiences are not publics, and it’s dangerous to claim that they are. Groups of people connected by the media can be connected in all sorts of ways, for all sorts of reasons, and can be called all sorts of things; they can be citizens united by common purpose, or by public deliberation. They can be activists, united around a shared political goal. They can be a community, or a society. Or they can be called an audience.

I don’t have anything at all against the notion of the audience, per se but I am concerned that journalists are increasingly equating the measurable audience (a statistical aggregate connected by technology, though consumption) with something bigger and more important. The fact that we know the desires and preferences and this formerly shadowy and hidden group of strangers is seductive, and it’s often wrong.

We end on a nice little essay from Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams about how the BP spill and the Chilean mine collapse, both slow to unfold epic news sagas, challenge our instant gratification news culture:

There will, and we ardently hope it’s soon, come a day when 33 men emerge into the sunlight. But we won’t have one perfect, magical moment when New York’s ground zero stops being a place of painful memories, when New Orleans will look like it did before Katrina, when Haiti unveils itself in some new dramatic incarnation or the Gulf of Mexico is suddenly all better. Help and healing don’t work that way. They demand the utmost of our endurance and test the limits of our patience. They make us hold our breaths and they break our hearts. Because most us would gladly stomp out a fire to save a life, but to hang on to hope,
ugg chestnut short Best Media Writing of the Week
day after exhausting day? That takes everything we’ve got.

Contact Us,Ugg boots and elegance. Paris Hilton and scholarship. South Beach and free. Some words just don’t belong in the same sentence together. Yet thanks to the magic of Purdy Lounge, they do. No, Paris Hilton isn’t reading the collected works of Proust while regally clad in Uggs. All that gratis booze is served with a side of the best dancehall, reggae, and old school hip hop jams. When you’re booty dancing to Q Tip, slinging back free drinks, and marveling at the cover free entrance to the club, anything seems possible. Well, maybe not that Paris Hilton reading Proust thing.

Sidebar is packed with contradictions. One of its owners used to work at Opium Group, the bottle service king of South Beach that manages clubs like Mansion and SET. Another used to be the manager at Bar, a dearly departed downtown hipster hole in the wall. Their former employers, in other words, represented diametrically different dimensions of Dade nightlife. At Sidebar, the cavernous inside with black walls, a stage, and a large dance floor is the perfect place to be drowned in sound and to dance the night away. The ample outdoor area, in contrast, provides a place to catch a break and some conversation. On Wednesday, Sidebar features live jazz, Fridays is for hip hop, and Saturdays are open format. It’s ladies’ night on Thursday, when there are the standard free drinks at the beginning of the night for women but also free ice cream for all. Sidebar can’t even be easily geographically categorized. It sits at the juncture of Brickell and Little Havana. And yet all these elements come together perfectly. Sidebar isn’t trying too hard to be one thing, but it’s not trying too hard to please everyone either. It’s just great.

Coyo Taco is a bright, fast casual taco joint in Wynwood with a dark secret. To find it, walk past the bathrooms and down the hall. There, you’ll find a small, square room, softly lit by novena candles. A DJ plays a mix of soft house music, and people lounge on comfortable sofas. You’ve found Coyo Taco’s hush hush bar. The small space is home to 50 tequilas and mezcals, all of which can be mixed into the bar’s inventive cocktails created by Coyo partner Anna Robbins. There’s a banana margarita, called the Anna Bannana (the extra “N” refers to Robbins’ childhood nickname), made with a rare Brazilian banana liqueur, and rimmed with sal de gusano, a Mexican salt made with ground gusano worms (the same ones getting drunk at the bottom of your Mezcal bottle). For health nuts falling off the wagon, there’s a chia margarita. But with 100 degree heat fast approaching, go for the bar’s Paleta ($14). A locally made paleta is cut in half. One part is used in the margarita; the other half serves as both garnish and refreshingly icy swizzle stick. In flavors like cocopassion and chili cucumber, these PaletaRitas are the most refreshing and boozy treat in Miami. The fact that they’re served in a secret bar filled with lit effigies of saints pushes the coolness factor off the charts.

You say you want your cheap drinks with a side of ribs? Come on down to Billy’s Pub Too, friend. An average bar might have a two hour window of discounts known as “Happy Hour,” but Billy’s has its time frame stretched to a full workday. until midnight with drink specials. It also ups the ante on Thursdays, when you can get 99 cent beer with a valid college ID. If you are looking for more than cheap booze, Billy’s boasts four pool tables, a back patio with a tiki bar, and foosball to keep you busy. And don’t forget those ribs. Mr. Cobb’s kitchen menu has wings, burgers, and Southern sides, but it’s the ribs that are completely memorable, sticking Billy’s firmly in your mind, teeth, and fingers. You can get a full meal of a quarter rack of ribs and fries for just $8.75. South Beach can keep its $18 cocktails you’ll have a better time up north, where the meat falls off the bone and the drink specials never expire.

Ball Chain likes to tout its history for good reason. The joint opened in 1935,
ugg boots leeds Best Ladies' Night
after all, near the tail end of the Great Depression. For two decades, it reigned as one of Miami’s most celebrated nightclubs, where greats like Billie Holiday and Chet Baker belted it out nightly. However, it closed in 1957 just as the Cuban immigrants who gave Little Havana its name began arriving in big numbers. It wasn’t until last fall that partners Bill Fuller, Zack Bush, and Ben Bush decided to the revive the lounge. Except for the exposed ceiling and rafters, almost everything that was original to Ball Chain was long gone. From that starting point, the owners painstakingly re created the 1935 bar. The result isn’t just a stunning reconnection to the city’s past it’s a happening nightlife spot that’s reintroducing the city at large to a neighborhood most people frequent only for the ethnic eats and cigars. Do yourself a favor and grab a spot at the bar to enjoy a mojito ($12) one of the most authentic versions you’ll find in Dade or a Calle Ocho old fashioned ($12) that uses tobacco bitters and actual tobacco leaves. Hungry? The Cuban spring roll ($8) takes the Cuban sandwich and wraps it inside a paper thin dough. And though it’s too late to see Holiday perform in person, Ball Chain keeps the musical spirit alive with DJs, live bands, and singers all week.

This strip mall space in Hialeah used to be called Our Place until that dive bar got busted by the feds May 2, 2014, for drug dealing and illegal gambling. Now under new ownership, the bar has gone legit. Architect Landy Lamas and builder Mo Lacayo have given these formerly sleazy digs a major face lift, a fresh booze list, and a new name, opening as the Bend Liquor Lounge in February 2015. “This was our local watering hole, our favorite dive, until it started going downhill,” Lamas told New Times just after the fixed up boozing spot began slinging drinks. “The bar was opened in the ’70s but had been muddled up by shabby remodels. After stripping it down to its bones, we could appreciate its original spirit and decided to build on it. Brewing), and $8 classic cocktails too. But no more cocaine, weed, or molly. Farm to table dining has all but become a clich in Miami, but how about farm to glass drinking? At Repour, Isaac Grillo’s intimate space tucked away inside the Albion Hotel, the idea is becoming a reality. The bar, furnished out of repurposed wood from Colorado, is a welcome and rustic respite from the Lincoln Road just outside the door. But what sets this place apart is the cocktails. The bartender turned bar owner makes drinks that are both whimsical and deceptively simple. Drinks, which are generally around $12, are handcrafted with care and use surprising ingredients like fresh herbs grown from onsite gardens, teas, and Pop Rocks (for a lip cracking version of a sugared rim). Special attention is also given to the way your drink is chilled. Grillo uses cold Colorado River rocks in some drinks; others are made with coconut water ice spheres. Although the cocktail menu changes monthly, there’s always a freshly made cocktail or two from the garden, as well as a few porch pounders all written right on the wall. There’s one constant, however. Grillo’s cocktails all contain a surprising twist a sprig of sage in a fruity drink or a hit of black pepper in honey because a city as exciting as Miami Beach needs cocktails that can keep us on our toes.

The tank is almost empty. And there are only a few miles left till you hit that long, winding southbound stretch of one lane Overseas Highway with no gas, food, or beverages. It’s a treacherous route along which the reckless road tripper could easily get stranded, go hungry, or even die of thirst while surrounded by a trillion gallons of salty sea. So you yank the wheel, pulling a U turn into the RaceTrac truck stop parking lot with plans for some unleaded, beef jerky, and ten liters of grape Gatorade. But that’s when you spot Sam’s Hideaway, with its placards that read, “Cocktails,” “Cold Beer,” and “The Oldest Southernmost Tavern on the Mainland USA.” Forget dehydrated meat and purple drink. This bar’s got cold $2.50 Budweiser and free hot dogs on Sundays. However, the strongest sign that Sam’s just might be paradise: a painting above the doorway depicting a fanciful Florida landscape in which two dolphins can be seen leaping out of cresting waves and over a frosty,

Contact Us,It has been said that O’Malley appeared on Hollywood Beach after the hurricane of 1926. Accounts vary as to where he came from: Some say he drifted ashore, some say he arrived by boat from the Bahamas, and some say the real story is much less interesting. One thing is certain it doesn’t matter. O’Malley’s Ocean Pub is a place where the worries of everyday life just wash away. It might be the fact that it’s located on a busy stretch of Hollywood Beach outdoors but at the same time covered and protected from the sweltering sun and unpredictable rain. Or it could be the variety of frozen drinks, double shot mojitos, and low priced, all day refills served in carved coconuts. Maybe it’s the bevy of televisions tuned to every sport available and the collections of people eagerly watching their fantasy teams on laptops thanks to the free WiFi. Most likely, it’s a combination of these things and the fact that more locals and regulars populate O’Malley’s than you’d expect at a busy beachside bar, proving it’s not a tourist trap or fad like so many other bars littering the beach.

Not much in South Florida makes a Philly fan feel at home. It’s nearly impossible to find a genuine Philly cheese steak, sports fans are more apathetic than psychopathic, and there is a haunting lack of William Penn statues. The Parrot Lounge is as close as it gets to walking down Broad Street. It’s game days when the Parrot really shines. Hours before kickoff during football season, hundreds of people flock to the bar. Once the Eagles take the field, 90 percent of the televisions are tuned to the Eagles and 100 percent of the folks in the bar are screaming (mostly obscenities) at the top of their lungs. Every play is scrutinized, every call is wrong, and every point scored is accompanied by an earth shattering E A G L E S chant. As a bonus, wear a Giants, Cowboys, or Redskins jersey during football season and you’re likely to get free drinks. “accidentally” spilled on you and your loved ones. Just don’t try it during the playoffs or you’ll be asked to leave for your own safety literally. It’s enough to make a grown Philly boy cry.

Nonsmokers don’t get it. They believe, in their lung of lungs, that with enough advertising campaigns and public education seminars, smokers will see the light, become converted, and quit. What they don’t understand is that you smoke because it’s awesome that a cigarette with coffee or a frosty pint of beer is the Greatest Thing in the World. Sure, your shelf life is limited. Your lungs are lined with more soot than a coal mine. You smell bad. And you know what else? You don’t give a shit. You will not convert. So in an age when smokers are pushed onto patios and exiled from their native habitats (bars), you need a bar that shares your passion a place where the beer selection is lengthy and British, where the jukebox is packed with funk and soul, where strangers buy you drinks and become friends. And that, my friends, is why you go to the Fox and Hound. Robbie and his dedicated crew are always quick to light your ciggie and empty your ashtray, often with such grace that you hardly know it’s happened. They take pride in being the finest pub around, and they welcome all types: even you scoundrels reeking of Marlboros.

When relatives come to town, they want to see skin. They’re sick of sweaters. And they should tell you this as soon as you grab them from the airport curb. If they don’t demand this because they should be demanding this do them the favor. Don’t take them to some fancy, indoor martini bar even if they request it. It’s January, they’ve forgotten what the sun feels like, and they know no reason. Just drive them to Dirty Blondes. For their sake, ignore any request that doesn’t involve the swarms of bathing suit clad 20 and 30 somethings who drink at this beachside bar. Remember the tiny bikinis and full liquor bar. Remember all the pool tables and games in the back and the beauty of the beach and ocean that can be seen from the front. And let them see the reason Florida’s been crowned the Sunshine State, after all.

Finding the right bartender is like meeting a soulmate: Once it’s happened, you’ll never stray. If you’ve been fortunate enough to stumble into (or out of) Maguire’s Hill 16 during Trixie’s (birth name: Tricia Cline) shifts, you already know this. More charming than a Shirley Temple and wiser than a desert shaman, this red haired libation mixer adds a dash of positive energy to every drink she serves. When prodded, she’ll explain that her cheerful demeanor stems, in part, from her other careers as a spiritual healer and ordained minister. So what is this nondrinking angel doing shoveling shots to you and your obnoxious friends? “I believe that you have to understand the dark to appreciate the light,” she’ll say, most likely with a wink. Belly up, become a regular, and have this sage pour you a Boddingtons. Just don’t forget to tip your life coach.

“You walk in here, it’s like Barbie fucked Beetlejuice,” quips drag show hostess Diva about the cabaret establishment Lips, where the disco balls outnumber the queens and performers boast such sophisticated monikers as Twat LaRue. It’s Friday, and it’s time for the late night revue. Diva informs those easily offended by bawdy humor, “You’ve just been fucked out of a cover charge.” She circles the room, endlessly singling out targets for questioning. But watching your friends squirm to avoid Diva’s merciless interrogations of their sexual history and anatomy is only half the fun and accounts for only a fraction of the show’s raunch factor. Bring lots of bills, and not just of the $1 variety. These ladies may call one another whore, but they’re not cheap whores.

Alligator Alley’s booze selection is nonexistent. But you won’t need shots, because the Alley’s beer selection is kickin’.

There are two brews from Unibroue, those incomparable Canadian brewers. There are Caribbean ales. Key West ales. Triple fermented craft beers. And the bar food is prepared with an attention to detail and inventive flair that’s hard to find at other watering holes. Fried oyster poboys are better than much of the competition in New Orleans, and mind bending spicy gumbo is cooked to secret specifications in ten gallon batches.

Yet it’s not the beer nor the food nor even the Alley’s reliably great jazz and rock music that make it so spectacular. It’s the place itself. Go in, drink, and eat and you’ll meet some of the coolest heads around. For lots of us, it is.

UPDATE: This location is now closed.

Sometimes you want a bar with a generous selection of top shelf liquor and tasteful d without the pretensions of a dress code. This is South Florida, after all, and you live here because Reefs are appropriate footwear pretty much everywhere. Georgie’s Alibi in Wilton Manors boasts three polished wooden bars with marble countertops, good booze, and awesome specials, including $1 domestic longnecks on Wednesdays and $2.50 margaritas on Mondays. A Wheel of Fortune type contraption on the wall dictates what additional specials will be at various designated times. Floor to ceiling television sets seem to rotate Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, and Madonna music videos. But if sensory overload brings out your Baudrillard esque paranoia, you can move out to the patio tables. You won’t be able to stare at the cute barback, but so goes barhopping.

When the powers that be decided to renovate the underused outdoor patio at Revolution Live and reinvent it as a permanent pool party, they went long on fun and short on pretension. They hired tiny, clean cut, young barmaids; adopted the tagline “Grillin’ and Chillin’ “; built the center bar as a replica swimming pool; and narrowed the musical set list to highly singable mainstream anthems. Friday only) straight after work, don’t be too anal about your nice J. Crew outfit, because you are highly likely to get caught in the crossfire of the bartenders’ water balloon fight. Said bartenders (dressed like lifeguards, down to the board shorts or bikini tops and whistles) will make it up to you by passing out free drink tokens as freely as Halloween candy and by putting three or four straws in those giant, bucket sized fruity cocktails. You know this is a place where things regularly veer out of control because they feel compelled to have a whole “Lost Found” page on their website. “Good morning!” it says, knowingly. “You had a lot of fun last night, huh? So what did you lose; cell phone, keys, a present, a friend, credit card, shoe, camera, boyfriend, your panties, your pride?”

Education is important, so cheers to learning in classrooms, and cheers to learning in bars near FAU classrooms. And cheers to the never ending lesson of learning one’s self. Monday to Friday. Is “happy hour” a marketing scheme designed to get you drunk? No, wait, put down the drink and listen for a moment. Are you supposed to be getting drunk during these hours? Hey, don’t throw that empty glass in this direction. OK, you’re heard: The only thing that matters here is being smart and saving money, and Nippers lets you do both.

The stretch of Dixie Highway from West Palm to Boynton Beach is a wonderland of dive bars: the Office, Harry’s Banana Farm. But the Little Owl Bar is the coziest, with its mix of blue collar Budweiser drinkers and the Lake Worth progressive set (you shall know them by nose rings or dangly earrings). The Owl’s dark main room, sticky floors, old pool table, and flickering TV are always welcoming sights, whether you’re here to suck down a longneck on a hot summer day, attend a Food Not Bombs potluck, or watch your favorite all girl punk band play (Go, Angry Pudding!).

And you thought you were in the know when you discovered Le Tub! Ha! This place is so low rent that it doesn’t even have walls. There’s no door, no sign, no cash register just a thatched roof hut decorated with bric a brac and a couple of tables nestled right on the shore of the Intracoastal, hidden just south of the Dania Beach pier. Whiling away hours at this gem of a hangout is just like chilling in a buddy’s backyard. if your buddy had a backyard minus a house. Owner Ed Colville opens from noon until dark, or whenever he feels like it. He need earn only enough to pay taxes on his little scrap of land. Ed will be happy to grill you a hamburger if you bring some (he doesn’t have a food license) or get you a beer out of the fridge he keeps in his shed ($3 for a can, $4 for a bottle). But most of all, he seems to enjoy hanging out here with his family and his dog, loving life and watching the boats pass by. That, and telling dirty jokes to his visitors.
