“I was the track coach at the time,” says Miller. “I had been coaching for a while. I was the head girls coach at that time, and we wanted to have something in Merrill to honor Otto Bacher.”

Merrill always hosts the invite towards the end of the season. It helps get the athletes ready for the postseason.

“Teams like to come here and get a taste of what regionals is going to be like,” says Merrill Activities Director Rick Bonnell. “We’ve been doing this for 31 years, and today we have probably about 12 teams. So it’s a big meet, and it’s really something that the community looks forward to.”

Teams like Antigo, Marshfield, and Rhinelander turned out for the big invite.

MADISON (AP) Officials in a southern Wisconsin county have proposed a large solar energy project.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Dane County is seeking proposals from private partners to build the project on land just north of the Dane County Regional Airport. The project would generate 8 megawatts of electricity on 41 acres of airport owned property.

The project would generate about three times more energy than a solar operation in Beloit, which is currently the largest in the region.

It’s uncertain how long the project would take,

how many solar panels would be used or how much money the project would cost because proposals are still being developed.

uggs mens slippers Blithe Spirit

ugg short boots Blithe Spirit

RATING: Spirit has passed beyond criticism, quite in the manner of the Queen Mother; venerable, unexceptionable, faintly twee, rather fondly regarded by those who can remember the Blitz. Except perhaps in one respect: Noel Coward claimed to have written the play in “five days during one of the darkest years of the war”, and though it is perhaps an effect of modern sensibilities, it is a matter for regret that he didn’t spend a sixth day tightening up the second half.

At two hours and 40 minutes including a 20 minute interval, nobody will feel they didn’t get value for money. But there are repetitive notions and businesses towards the end that could have been left out without too much detriment.

As with other productions of this 50th anniversary season for the MTC, the play has other significances; it was produced in the inaugural season of the (then) Union Theatre Repertory Company. It’s also the last production of the current season. He is married to a second wife, Ruth (Roz Hammond), and in the course of the seance the spirit of his first wife, Elvira (Pamela Rabe), is called back from the Other Side, hellbent on causing trouble for her replacement.

The MTC has assembled an impressive cast; the principals are joined by Georgie Bax as dotty maid Edith, and Mark Pegler and Merridy Eastman as the other seance guests, Dr and Mrs Bradman. Perhaps the standout is Margolyes in the role of the eccentric medium. Blithe Spirit is the MTC debut for Margolyes, familiar to many for her appearances in Blackadder, as the Nurse in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. She has a striking comic presence, and does the plum role in the play justice.

Also striking is Gabriela Tylesova’s set design; in fact “striking” may be too faint a term to describe it. The entire interior, floor to ceiling, is done out in a kind of gigantic red and white wallpaper, which, unsurprisingly, dominates the whole look of the production. Daring, no doubt, as was her superb black and white design for The Visit earlier this year, but this time it jars with what is otherwise a quite conventional production. The magic tricks a flying vase, a floating table and so on work well, and the lighting by Matt Scott creates a spooky atmosphere very nicely.

Most of the original naughty thrills the idea of a man with two simultaneous wives have lost their effect, but Blithe Spirit is still charming in a slightly faded sort of way, and makes an appropriate end to this significant anniversary season for the company.

ugg boots usa Blacks more likely to be wrongfully convicted

“I trusted in the justice system and it failed me,” he said.

Anderson is just one of hundreds of black men who have been convicted of and exonerated for crimes they didn’t commit. A new report from the National Registry of Exonerations, a joint project between the University of California, Irvine; University of Michigan Law School and Michigan State University College of Law, shows that blacks are more likely to be wrongfully convicted than whites and are also likely to spend longer in prison before being exonerated for their crimes. While blacks represent 13% of the US population, they represent a whopping 47% of the 1,900 exonerations in the registry. “Non implicit racism has never gone away either.”

Researchers focused on three types of crimes where blacks were more likely than whites to be exonerated: murder, sexual assault and drug crimes. While they acknowledged that the causes of each exoneration “differ sharply from one type of crime to another,” they also said they found patterns of racial discrimination in all three groups.

According to the researchers, innocent blacks are seven times more likely to be convicted of murder than innocent whites. Gross said this was partly because homicide rates among blacks are higher than among whites, and innocent blacks are therefore more likely to get suspected and convicted of murder. (According to data from the FBI, 52% of murder victims in 2014 were black and 46% were white, and 53% of offenders were black compared to 45% who were white).

In addition, murder cases where a black defendant was wrongfully convicted were 22% more likely to involve police misconduct than those involving white defendants.

Blacks serving time for sexual assault are three and a half times more likely to be innocent than whites that have been convicted of sexual assault. The bulk of the racial disparities in sexual assault convictions can be explained by white victims who mistakenly identify black assailants, said Gross, particularly when the victim is a white woman and the offender a black man.

Gross said whites are less likely to accurately identify black faces a concept known as “cross racial identification.”

When it comes to drug crimes, innocent blacks were 12 times more likely to be convicted than innocent whites. While blacks and whites have similar rates of illegal drug use, black people are more likely to be arrested and convicted of such offenses than white people are, researchers found.

Planned demonstrations include the 1875 Protest for the Sky live home clash with Wolves on October 29 in which organisers are asking fans not to take their seats until the 18th minute and to leave them in the 75th minute, to symbolise the year the club was founded.

Organisers are also asking supporters to Whistle Blow on Venky’s by bringing and blowing whistles before, at half time and at full time in the home games with Ipswich Town on October 15 and Nottingham Forest on October 18.

BRFC Action Group chairman Mark Fish said: “Since that ill fated day in November 2010 when Venkateshwara Hatcheries purchased Blackburn Rovers,

this famous football club has been in a decline which the owners seem both unable and uninterested in halting.

“The supporters of Blackburn Rovers are issuing a vote of no confidence in the board of directors and the owners of their club and the only acceptable outcome for the supporters is for Venkateshwara Hatcheries to sell the club with immediate effect.”

Alan Birkbeck, of Ewood Blues, added: “The reason behind the 1875 protest is to get as many fans back in the stadium to show the owners what Ewood should be like and that is why we are taking up our seats after 18 minutes of play then leaving our seats after 75 minutes of play.

“This is to show the owners what it is like now. 1875 was the year this great club was born,

Members of the campus’s Black Student Union blocked Sather Gate on Saturday morning, redirecting Cal Day attendees around both sides of the gate as members protested the current campus climate for black students at UC Berkeley. For more than an hour, they remained lined up in front of the gate, tying rope across it.

“This inconvenience is nothing compared to the inconvenience that black students feel on this campus,” said Myles Santifer, chair of the BSU and a UC Berkeley junior.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people streamed through campus for Cal Day, an annual event held to showcase the campus, particularly to prospective students and parents. Although a few people attempted to push through the gate one man tripped as he tried to struggle through most people walked around it.

The protesters allowed people with disabilities and families with young children through. Released last month, the demands include proposals to hire two full time black admissions staff members and to rename Barrows Hall to honor Assata Shakur, an activist who has been dubbed a terrorist by the FBI.

Dirks has met with BSU members and responded to the demands in a letter, in which he described ongoing efforts to meet black students’ needs, such as hiring a student athlete development adviser to work with black athletes. He also emphasized a campus initiative being developed to make broad changes to the campus climate and the numbers of black students and faculty on campus.

BSU members, however, have criticized the Dirks’ response to their demands, which Santifer described as dismissive, and have urged for more immediate action.

ugg boots for boys Black Friday special

It’s the first Friday after Thanksgiving in the US that kick starts the Christmas season. To celebrate many American stores offer lots of heavily discounted one day deals, but usually it’s only on one or two big star products. However, in the recent years a bit like Halloween it’s started to move across the Atlantic and this year we’re expecting it to be bigger than ever across the UK. Alongside Cyber Monday (next Monday) we’re expecting to see deals come through all weekend.

Where am I likely to find these deals?

Certainly at the bigger American retailers Apple, Amazon, Asda (owned by Walmart). But increasingly UK retailers are getting involved, the supermarkets, the electrical stores, even Johnson’s the drycleaners has Black Friday deals this year. While there will be a few codes, these tend not to be cross store promotions, they’re more likely to be a few single items heavily reduced.

How do I know if the Black Friday price is any good?

Check elsewhere first, don’t assume just because it’s discounted that it’s right for you. Use a shopbot, a shopping comparison site like Pricegrabber,Pricerunner and Kelkoo. These will give you the prices that a range of online retailers are selling it for.

So I should be out there today buying as much as I can?

No! Don’t let Black Friday drive your shopping habits, just because it’s discounted doesn’t mean it’s right for you. The best thing is to have a list of what you want and see if anyone is discounting it at a good price, not just to be drawn on impulse.

Most importantly ask yourself: will I use it? Is it worth it? Have I checked it’s cheaper anywhere else? If the answer’s no: don’t buy it.

What are your top picks of the deals?

Many Black Friday discounts are kept secret until the day, so here’s a selection of things available right now some are Black Friday deals and some are just good deals on this week.

Tomorrow (Friday) The Body Shop will release its Black Friday bundle to the public. It’s 30 and contains eight products including body butter, shower gel and mascara. If bought separately these would cost 76.50.

.20,000 ‘free’ MegaBus seats (50p booking fee)

Budget coach travel provider MegaBus is offering 20,000 one way tickets on nearly all of its routes in England, Scotland, Wales and Europe for travel between Monday 12 January and Thursday 12 February.

Bookings must be made at least seven days in advance and you can book up to 60 days in advance. It valid on Mon Thu trips only and you just need to pay a 50p booking fee per transaction, not per ticket. MegaBus covers most of Great Britain and parts of Europe, including Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam and Luxembourg.

While 20,000 sounds a lot, they can still take some finding and it mostly a case of trial and error as they scattered across many routes. Megabus says the tickets are released in tranches on its website every day (except Fri Sun) until Thu 12 Feb, so if you can find a ticket one day, don give up, as one might appear later in the promo.

Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.

First, it’s important to keep in mind that all Black Friday deals aren’t always a bargain. An analysis by Nerd Wallet found 95 percent of the deals offered in Black Friday advertisements are repeats from other times in the year.

That’s not slowing most people down, however. A recent poll showed 76 percent of Americans said they plan to shop on Thanksgiving or Black Friday and will spend an average of 4.5 hours doing so. The average shopper will spend about $529 for holiday gifts this year,

The holiday shopping season kicked off early, as several retailers began offering deals on Thanksgiving Day. Many people complained about the early start and the mad rush for deals. In Rhode Island, volunteers set up a coat exchange program as an alternative to consumerism.

The day after Thanksgiving, called Black Friday, is typically the biggest shopping day of the year. For a decade, it had been considered the official start of the holiday buying season. But in the past few years, retailers have pushed opening times into Thanksgiving night. They’ve also pushed up discounting that used to be reserved for Black Friday into early November, which has led retail experts to question whether the Thanksgiving openings will steal some of Black Friday’s thunder.

The holiday openings came despite threatened protests from workers’ rights groups, which are opposed to employees working on the holiday instead of spending the day with family.

Overall, the National Retail Federation expects retail sales to be up 4 percent to $602 billion during the last two months of the year. That’s higher than last year’s 3.5 percent growth, but below the 6 percent pace seen before the recession.

Analysts expect sales to be generated at the expense of profits, as retailers will likely have to do more discounting to get people into stores.

Here’s how the start of the holiday shopping season is playing out. All times are EST, unless otherwise specified.

Greg Gerritt, an environmental activist from Providence, liked the idea of Buy Nothing Day but wanted to do something that gave back to the community. So he came up with the idea of having people donate a coat or get one for free. The state’s Buy Nothing Day coat exchange is now marking its 17th year and has inspired similar events in Kentucky and Utah, Gerritt said.

This year, 15 sites were set up around Rhode Island for people to give or take a coat. The exchange on the lawn of the Statehouse went through a few thousand coats last year. Gerritt picked that site intentionally because it sits in the shadow of the Providence Place mall. He said he hopes the location will highlight the negative effects of consumerism on society.

Maureen Keane is unemployed and picked up four coats for friends as Christmas gifts. She says she can’t afford gifts this year and calls it a wonderful program.

Michelle R. Penney store manager feels encouraged after lackluster 2012. Penney’s Manhattan store, said he’s encouraged by the traffic and sales he is seeing. Penney spokeswoman Daphne Avila said the chain saw similar crowds at other locations across the country. Friday. That made the retailer one of the laggards for the unofficial kickoff to the shopping season. It also cobbled together a few deals at the last minute. Thursday.

“It felt like getting back to the old times,” Cardamone said. “Last year, it was heartbreaking because we were never in the game.”

He added that he saw new customers and once loyal ones who hadn’t been back for a while.

The encouraging signs come as Penney is trying to recover from a botched transformation plan spearheaded by Ron Johnson, who was ousted as CEO in April after 18 months on the job.

Penney brought back Johnson’s predecessor, Mike Ullman, as CEO. He is restoring frequent sales and basic merchandise that were eliminated as Johnson aimed to attract a more affluent, younger shopper.

The Christiana Mall had a partial power outage, though many stores still had power.

Delmarva Power said a fuse problem with the mall’s electrical system caused the outage. Full power was restored in less than an hour. During the outage, some storefronts pulled down security gates. There was also an increased police and mall security presence.

Otherwise, Abruzzio and his wife, Sherry, were more interested in avoiding big crowds than scoring savings on Black Friday. They aborted an attempt to buy gifts at Savannah’s Bass Pro Shop when they saw what looked like at least 100 people waiting for cashiers.

“I just put our stuff back,” Abruzzio said. “We didn’t want to stand in line all day.”

Sherry Abruzzio said she tends to do much of her Christmas shopping online and finds she gets better deals if she waits until mid to late December.
