The Bryant University women lacrosse team struggled for goals all afternoon, however, found themselves down by just one at halftime, but Wagner College separated in the second half and did allow the defending Northeast Conference champs to claw back, as a new titleholder was crowned with Sunday 11 7 decision in Smithfield.

The Bulldogs (13 5) and their impressive season comes to an end despite a stellar showing from sophomore attack Catlin Brown (San Diego, Calif.). The all tournament team selection paced her team all weekend, scoring three goals and handing out an assist in Sunday loss.

The Seahawks (10 8) were paced by their senior laden group. Reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year Shea Gegan had three helpers, Kimmy Tumolo had a goal and two assists and the tournament MVP Tori McGrath had two goals and one assist. Olivia Streilein netted three goals off the bench and Heidi Colford and Stephanie Peterson added two scores. Netminder Katie Ferraro played out of her mind, making 12 stops in the win, also earning all tournament honors.

Brown got the Bulldogs on the board just two minutes into the game after a nice feed from Britton in front of the cage. Though the first score came early, the game would be a defensive battle for much of the first half.

McGrath netted her sixth goal over the last two games at the 20:37 mark to make it 1 1. It took another 10 minutes of back and forth contesting before the third goal of the afternoon was sent into the cage, as Streilein gave the visitors their first lead, 2 1.

Brown converted a free position attempt and then set up fellow all tournament team member Brennan for a goal to make it 3 2 in favor of the hosts with 4:24 to go in the half. But McGrath and Colford tacked on scores over the final 3:39 to give the Seahawks a 4 3 edge at the break.

Trailing by just one heading into the second frame, the Seahawks made sure that Bryant would not secure a third straight NEC title, as they scored the first three goals in an 11 minute stretch to make it 7 3 with 19:05 to play.

Brown netted her third of the game on her second free position rip midway through the stanza to make it 7 4, but Tumolo and Streilein continued to add to the visitor lead with goals over the ensuing six minutes.

The Bulldogs had a handful of chances, but were unable to convert those opportunities until DeMeo caged her first at the 4:30 mark to make it 9 5. It was as close as the defending champs would get to make a third consecutive NCAA Tournament. Gretchen Fay and Peterson responded to the DeMeo goal with two more for Wagner, making it 11 5 with under two minutes to play. Descalzo closed out her career with one final score with 13 seconds to play, but it was much too little too late, as Wagner won its first NEC title in program history.

The outstanding careers of Descalzo and Britton come to an end, as both will go down as two of the best players to every don a black and gold uniform. Descalzo walks away as the program all time leader in goals (177) and tied for second on the all time points list (195). Britton exits as Bryant top draw control winner (171) and second for career assists (83).

Though the Bulldogs came up short and could not attain a third straight NEC Tournament crown or trip to the NCAA Tournament, 2016 marked the third straight season that they had won at least 13 games. The group featured just three seniors, so the majority of this season key contributors will be back in 2017 when they look to return to the top of the league.

The four game winning streak the Laurentian University Voyageurs men’s basketball team were cruising along on has been snapped by their northern rivals.

On Saturday, a tough fourth quarter, in which the Voyageurs were outscored 26 20 in, helped sink the Voyageurs 101 96 versus the Nipissing Lakers at Ben Avery Gymnasium.

“I’m not really pleased with our defence and rebounding,” Voyageurs head coach Shawn Swords said of his charges’ effort. “That intensity that has been there for most of the season wasn’t there. We gave up 100 points and they average 70 a game.”

Voyageurs’ Kadre Gray scored a game high 34 points, while Josis Mikia Thomas, coming off the bench, netted 16 points. Anthony Lacoe and OJ Watson tallied 12 points.

For the Lakers, Marcus Lewis and Marvin Ngonadi led the way with 21 points.

The Lakers led 27 26 after the first quarter and 50 46 after the second.

The Voyageurs outscored the Lakers 30 25 to take a 76 75 lead into the fourth quarter.

“We were up six in the fourth, too,” Swords said. “But we tried to outscore them and we didn’t put a priority on the defensive end. We were a little narrow minded in terms of winning one game, which is typically not our concern. Our concern is usually about improving.”

Saturday’s loss comes after the Voyageurs scored a 82 72 win over the Lakers in Nipissing last Wednesday.

The Voyageurs are now 16 3, good for 32 points and second place in the Eastern Conference. They’re six points behind the first place Carleton, and six points ahead of the third place Ottawa.

“I don’t think they were looking towards Ottawa, but we didn’t look to improve in this game,” Swords said about Saturday’s loss. “There was a lack of intensity and attention to detail. It wouldn’t have mattered who we were playing.”

The top two teams get a first round bye in the playoffs.

“If we get a bye it’s great, but if we’re playing terrible and we get a bye, it won’t help,” Swords said. “If we’re not improving the next four games it won’t matter where we finish going into the playoffs. It’s about improving every day. There’s years we hadn’t been successful standings wise, but I liked the way we were going into the playoffs, and we won games we were apparently not supposed to. We’re trying to improve, and if we keep improving, that stuff will take care of itself.”

The women Voyageurs basketball team are now on a two game winning streak thanks to a 84 48 victory over the Lakers at Laurentian University on Saturday.

Emily Tinnes led all scorers with 18 points,
ugg australia kensington boots Lack of intensity costs LU cagers
teammate L’Ashante Henry banked 16 points, Mackenzie Robinson secured 14 points, and so too did Adriane Bruni.

The Voyageurs trailed 16 13 after the first quarter, but had an outburst offensively and put together a 71 32 run to earn the win.

The local OUA basketball product are now 5 14.

Hockey men surge, women slump

The Voyageurs men’s hockey team kept their playoff hopes alive with back to back wins over the Lakers.

On Friday, the Voyageurs erased a two goal deficit to win 4 2, with goals by Blake Forslund, Xavier Couture, Brent Pedersen and Nicolas Dionne.

MacKenzie Savard stopped 22 of 24 shots for the win.

On Saturday, Dylan Fitze scored 4:48 into overtime to earn a 4 3 win over the Lakers.

The Voyageurs again trailed 2 0 after the first period, and 3 1 after the first six minutes of the third period, but Richard Therrien, with a goal at 8:58 of the third, and Pedersen, with a marker at 10:12, helped push the game into overtime before Fitze’s heroics.

Savard again picked up the win, this time with 32 saves on 35 shots.

These two wins keeps the Voyageurs in eighth in the Eastern Conference, with a 9 16 1 record, and 19 points, two points ahead of UQTR and RMC, who sit ninth and tenth.

The LU women’s hockey team has now lost three straight games, having lost 3 0 to Toronto on Friday, and 2 1 to Ryerson on Saturday.

Census Bureau, the amount of money Americans spent shopping online increased by 4.9 percent in the second quarter of 2014, up to 75 billion dollars. Add to this the fact that a number of major retailers are struggling, and we have what could be something of a “perfect storm” for shoppers this Labor Day weekend.

With fierce competition among stores, and Americans spending an increasing percentage of their retail dollars online, it is hardly a surprise that we’re predicting a fantastic time to shop for web shoppers this Labor Day weekend.

Having already seen larger than typical discounts at some of the biggest online shopping sites, we think those shopping from home for their bargains this Labor Day weekend (and indeed, all week long) are in for some unusually large savings this week.

In the world of retail, whether of the online or traditional “brick and mortar” variety, it is a commonly held belief that the key to a successful holiday shopping period is to be the first to offer big discounts and the first to tell everyone about it.

As a result, we’re seeing bigger than usual Labor Day discounts, and seeing them earlier than ever before. Following a pattern which began with Christmas sales advertised long before Thanksgiving, and “end of season” apparel sales that with as much as one month prior to that season’s actual end, the Labor Day Sales have already begun.

While apparel sales will feature prominently, we’re seeing deals on all sorts of merchandise, from electronics to travel. To narrow things down a bit, we’ve compiled a list of the top ten online sales we’ve found so far. They just hit you with some of the best deals you’ll find. This Labor Day week we’ll see big discounts on Tools,
chestnut ugg slippers Labor Day 2014 sales better than average
Patio items, and Pools and accessories. The only thing you won’t find is “soup and nuts.”No site we know of has more significant and consistent discounts on shoes and apparel than these folks. This weekend you’ll see The North Face Up to 65 percent off, Uggs on sale, Nine West up to 65 percent off and a lot more. This one ends on Sept. 1.

Daily Steals

Our favorite “Daily Deals” site is running huge blowout sale all weekend starting on Friday, Aug. 29. Sale ends on Sept. 1.

Verizon FIOS

We’re pretty sure this is the best incentive we’ve ever seen from them. When you activate new service and sign up for a two year contract, you’ll get 2 years of FiOS Quantum TV for free, and an LG G Pad 8.3 LTE Tablet for free or $200 off any other tablet. If you prefer not having a contract, they’re also offering the FIOS Triple Play bundle for the same price, and you get a free $300 Visa gift card.

Home Depot

They’ve had the most aggressive discounts of all the home stores this year, and Labor Day is no exception. You’ll find an extra 10 percent off appliances $397 or more, 60 percent off air filters, deep discounts on grills and much more. This one ends on Sept. This is a good time to pick up a nice shirt or pair of dress pants. You also get free shipping with coupon FREESHIPAF.

Dell Home

Yes, they make and sell computers. But this weekend we’re looking at some excellent deals on video games and TVs in particular. You’ll find FIFA 15 for $59.99 and get a free $25 promo egift card with it, a 39″ Sharp LED HDTV with a free $125 egift card and a lot more.

Best Buy

From cameras to computers, Best Buy has had some of the best deals on the web all year. We’re seeing big discounts like the complete series of Breaking Bad for 40 percent less than anywhere else, cell phones with and without contracts at big discounts, laptops for $200 and tons of other stuff.

On y retrouve plusieurs petits cafs proximit.

Sydney compte une panoplie de parcs bien entretenus, pour la plupart quips de tables pique nique et de barbecues en plein air. Notre parc prfr est celui de Pirrama avec ses jeux d’eau pour les enfants et la vue sur Harbour Bridge.

uggs on sale womens La Paz offers close encounters with whale sharks

The Sea of Cortez is blue and inviting; except for the three large fins, slowly emerging and then disappearing into the ocean. Our guide stops the boat and we put on our flippers and snorkel equipment, and prepare to jump in.

I know they are whale sharks and feed on plankton, but my heart is in my throat.

Five of us start swimming in the direction we last saw the fins, then our guide motions to my left. I turn and I face to face with an adolescent whale shark, his mouth agape. There a moment of panic, as I stare at the the biggest fish in the world. I in their world, and I uncomfortable. He dives back down, and to my right I see the fin of another one, marked with distinctive leopard like patterns, sweep by me. We surrounded, but our guide is right they couldn care less if we were there.

Overlooking the CostaBaja Resort, from the golf course clubhouse.

Many visitors to Mexico will head to Cabo, on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. But a more authentic Mexico, complete with fresh seafood, deserted beaches, and the whale sharks we came face to face with, is all just a two hour drive north, in the city of La Paz.

Nestled in the Bay of La Paz, facing the Sea of Cortez, the city doesn have the busy night life that characterizes other Mexican tourist destinations. Winding cobbled streets lead to character bars and high end restaurants near the boardwalk overlooking the ocean. Because of the plethora of ocean life, the area attracts divers and marine biologists from all over the world.

Balandara Beach is just a few miles north of La Paz. Tourists can rent paddleboards or canoes to explore the still, shallow beach.

There is a resort situated just outside of the town, CostaBaja, complete with a marina, hotel, restaurants and pools.

Our group joined one of the tour companies that operates out of the marina, taking wildlife watchers out to the nearby Isla Esp Santo, a Natural Reserve site that is protected under UNESCO. Locals are particularly proud that no development has been allowed on the paradise of sandy beaches, fascinating rock formations and aquamarine water.

Ten minutes out of the marina, we were lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins. Unlike the whale sharks, they seemed just as curious to check out us,
how to wash ugg slippers La Paz offers close encounters with whale sharks
playing in the wake of our boat and jumping up out of the water to check us out.

A dolphin joins us on our day trip out to Isla Espritu Santo. The ocean around La Paz is teeming with wildlife, including sea lions and whale sharks.

Our first stop was a coral reef, that also happens to be a popular breeding ground for California sea lions. The water is crystal clear, and full of brightly coloured fish, plants, and crabs. The water was warm and inviting, and some of the adolescent sea lions swam over to say hello. Our guide instructed us to stay away from the colony. As long as swimmers don approach too close to the young cubs, the large males guarding the colony don mind the sightseers.

Lunch was fresh ceviche and sandwiches on Isla Partida, a popular stop with the tour groups for one long, secluded beach, and warm aquamarine water that seems to never end.

The fresh seafood is a highlight of the area. Over a five course dinner that culminated in a main course of freshly caught red snapper, Samuel Rodriguez, the sales director for the resort, filled us in on one of his favourite activities. He said he and his wife will go to one of the nearby beaches and dig for the chocolate clams that are plentiful in the area. Once they found a few, they sit on the beach and snack on them, adding a little bit of lime juice.

A rocky cove on the Isla Espritu Santo, a Natural Reserve site just off the coast that is protected under UNESCO.

It isn difficult to find other fresh seafood options. Located directly on La Paz waterfront esplanade is Bismarkcito, and seafood is their specialty. Even better than the view of the Bay of La Paz is the casual restaurant seafood platter. Fresh shrimp, oysters, snails and octopus pair perfectly with the breezy, open dining experience. For those looking for a more authentic Mexican experience, fish tacos are on the menu, and they are crispy, light and flavourful.

Although cosmopolitan dining options are plentiful (the eggplant lasagna at Sorstis alone is worth the trip), there are plenty of Mexican restaurants as well. One of the best is Rancho Viejo, a meat lover paradise, where we feasted on tacos. For a nightcap, you can do much better than La Miserable, a hip little mezcaleria with knowledgeable staff. Don believe the name, there nothing miserable about sampling mezcals from all over Mexico.

Whether you looking for adventure, relaxation, or a variety of good food, La Paz offers it all. No one from the organization read or approved of this article before publication.

Napa Valley, Tuscany, Bordeaux, Sonoma and Mendoza are known among wine aficionados. Dan Bacin is giving his best effort to see La Grange inch its way up that list.

The La Grange Village Board recently approved adding a wine tasting amendment to the village’s liquor code, but Bacin and his restaurant, Bella Bacino’s, has hosted wine events in the near west suburb for the entirety of the restaurant’s 10 year history. The change in village code is more of an administrative formality.

Bacin and his wife, Linda, live in Burr Ridge and run their family of Italian style restaurants, with three locations in Chicago and the single suburb star in La Grange.

The La Grange restaurant, located on the main drag downtown at 36 N.

“I’ve always had a focus on people who live and breathe and experience wine on a daily basis,” Bacin said. “Wine is an expression of place, and it’s my belief that the person who is waking up and breathing Tuscan air can best tell the story of the wine made there.”

Bacin is a storyteller he can explain each signature in his restaurant and the signer’s relevance to the world of wine. And when he does, it’s in their respective accent, whether Italian, Argentinean or a Texas drawl.

But he doesn’t need to tell each story because they’re written on the walls of his restaurant. The walls are made from 27 years worth of wooden wine boxes, the ceiling is lined with empty wine bottles from all around the world and the cabinets are signed by wine makers who visited the restaurant.

Parts of the interior of Bella Bacino is decorated with signatures from wine lovers from all over the world. (Bridget Doyle/TribLocal photo)

“I’m proud they pick our humble place in La Grange to hold court,” Bacin said.

Although wine is often intellectualized, Bacin said, he believes his events are more of an intimate, casual conversation. And it’s largely for this reason, he said, that the restaurant’s events draw oenophiles from not just the surrounding villages, but Lake Forest, Joliet, Naperville, Beecher and even Denver, Colo.

“Wine is an attraction across socioeconomic class and geography,” Bacin said. “I’ve always said wine is the second most common language in the world after music.”
