A super fit Northumberland athlete will represent Great Britain in the World Championships while helping to raise money for Cancer Research after her friend was diagnosed with the disease.
Marie Drozdowicz, from Morpeth,
has secured a place in the duathlon at the international sporting event which will be held in Adelaide, Australia in October.
The fitness fanatic will be representing the England Athletics association within the Great Britain team for the duathlon event which consists of a 10k run, followed by a 35k cycle ride and ends with a further 5k run.
The mother of 27 year old twins Adam and Anastasia said: “I took part in the World Championships last year and came 10th. This year I’ve moved up a age category so I think I have a very good chance as I’ll be one of the youngest. I’m aiming to come back with a medal. I really feel I am capable of doing it.”
The 55 year old says she likes to prove her fitness to herself by running against younger women.
Marie, who works as a dog groomer and personal trainer, is a member of the Elswick Harriers and Alnwick Cycling Club and goes on fell runs with her border collie Ugg.
The runner said training has always been a part of her life and she usually comes first or second in her category when she takes part in 10k races.
She added that her children have got used to her sporty lifestyle and her daughter jokingly calls her a “freak” for preferring to go on hill runs rather than on a shopping trip.
This year, she has decided to ask others to sponsor her physical feat and raise money for Cancer Research as her friend Peter, who is a pensioner, is currently battling prostate cancer.
Donations have already reached with 13 days left to reach the final target of “I just think how generous people are. I’ve had some lovely encouragement and it’s for a great cause.
